Post-Translational Modification

Reported by Gemini Smith | March 26th, 2024 @ 06:56 PM

Protein post-translational modifications is a process that takes place to one or more amino acids on a protein following ribosome-mediated translation of the protein. The majority of the time, ribosomes convert mRNA into polypeptide chains, which PTM then forms into mature protein products, to make proteins. PTMs are involved in signal transduction pathways, ligand or other protein interactions, targeting particular subcellular compartments, and controlling protein folding. PTM can happen at the C- or N-termini of proteins, as well as on the side chains of amino acids. One of the most prevalent PTMs is phosphorylation, whose mechanism is connected to the control of enzyme activity.
