The Direct Defense of IgE Against Bee Venom
It has long been known that IgE plays a crucial role in allergy symptoms such hives, swelling, wheezing, and in extreme situations, anaphylactic shock. But this was the first time that IgEs were shown to have a direct protective function against poisons. The mice exhibited remarkable resistance to higher concentrations of the toxin, the researchers discovered, after being exposed to minute doses of bee venom. It is possible to compare the immune response triggered by vaccination to this defensive immunological response against the venom. However, the reaction in humans is very different: in those who are sensitive, repeated exposure to bee venom can result in severe allergic reactions.
